The client for this kitchen project had a huge wish list for a small space. Besides the usual desires for more and better storage and function, she really wanted an island with seating. Aesthetically, she wanted to update the outdated looks for something more modern, clean, and bright. We tried numerous ways to get the island, and looked at taking down a wall and all the options, but ultimately most things were too out of the budget. So we ended up keeping the narrow island, but extended it an additional 4 feet in order to get 2 seats there. The right side, wonky with varying depths and an unneeded desk, became all-flush with pantry cabinets, ovens, and the and fridge. Mixed finishes really stand out in the space, with 3 colors of cabinetry, 2 metal finishes, and polished and matte stone surfaces. A custom-designed tile hood is the focal point, with it’s veining mirroring that of the quartz backsplash.
